Day 4 (8 Nov 2014) in Gunma
We decided to take it easy today just visiting the primary tourist
attraction, Fukiware Falls(吹割の滝) in Numata-shi, Tone-machi.
Hence, we had a very leisurely breakfast and a long dip in the hotspring. By the time we set out for the waterfalls, it
was already past 10am. We made fewer
photo stops despite the better natural outdoor lighting except at some orchards
laden with gigantic apples and another picture perfect site ablazed with autumn
hues.

We had some problems finding the cascading falls but it was
a blessing in disguise as I discovered a hidden gem behind a small eatery stall
where we dropped by to ask for direction while my friend had his fill of
tempura. It was another autumn haven by
the side of a river. The vivid colours here
were even more glorious than the day before. We were blessed to find a very charming and
helpful girl who could speak decent English.
She even drove back to look for us after realising that Fukiware Falls is only 2-3 minutes’ drive from the eatery
instead of the 10-15 minutes which she told us earlier!
The lighting was rapidly dimming when we finally arrived at
the roaring rapids. The giant swirls in
the river remind me of whirlpools. The entire opposite bank of the cascading
river was adorned with beautiful hues.
For anyone visiting Tone-machi in
Gunma, I would strongly recommend this as a must see-visit attraction during
the koyo season. It is listed as 1 of
100 top waterfalls sites in Japan and a natural monument. When we finally headed back to the car,, it
was almost 5pm and I had to speed up on our return journey to the hotel because
of the pre-appointed time for dinner. The Japanese are renown for their punctuality
and meals were always served on the DOT!
